Iguanas of St. Croix

For most of my childhood years going up in St. Croix, I never saw an iguana anywhere. But in the past 12 years, you can see iguanas in the trees and bushes around your neighborhood or scurrying across paved roads in forested areas. Some people have them as pets. Some iguanas will approach you as they may have gotten accustomed to being fed flowers, lettuce, or leaves by tourists or locals.

How did they get here?

The iguanas found in the U.S. Virgin Islands are the Green Iguana. Studies conducted on iguanas have lead scientists to believe that the Green Iguana species originated in South America and over time spread through Central America and the Caribbean. So how did the iguanas get here in the first place? How did the iguanas travel between islands -by boat, floating debris! One thing I know for sure is that they intend to stay.
