Stuart Rames, Artist, Retired Firefighter

You won’t want to miss Starving Artists Day on December 1st. Starving Artists was originally started after Hurricane Hugo in 1989 by the St. Croix Landmarks Society to give local artisans a place to sell their goods during the recovery period of the island. Originally, the event was offered three times a year but is now held once a year‒the first Sunday after Thanksgiving.

Starving Artists Day has much to offer. You will enjoy live music, local cuisine, food and candy-making demonstrations, craft demonstrations, guava berry competition, and of course local art and crafts. Beautiful art pieces, photographs, wood sculptures, handmade jewelry, mocko jumbies and Christmas decorations made from local materials are among the uniquely featured items. Great fun for the entire family and as a bonus, you can visit the Whim Museum and get in a little history.

Featured Artist:  Stuart Rames, Artist, Retired Firefighter.

I actually had this idea to do the Andy Warhol-like with a local personality so I picked Jamesie because he is great!  Originally I was trying to get it that each panel was similar but then I decided to have it look more like he was in motion and playing at different venues rather than just copying.  So it is actually on a different day he wears a different shirt…I think he came out great!

I have had the gift of being able to draw since I was a kid. I started painting as a teen.  Whenever I felt emotion welling up in me that I couldn’t express otherwise, I put it on canvas.  My Dad painted in oils and I remember my sister Melody is very good at sketching also. I am always in the pursuit of beauty and innovation…..and it is rare that I am ever truly satisfied with a piece. That is why my subjects and technique differ from work to work. The ideas are as endless as my imagination. I am sure I won’t fall short on avenues to do just that.  Learn more about the King of Scratch Band Music.
