One day I was perusing on one of the major social media platforms and came across a video talking about couples’ game cards. It sparked my curiosity so I decided to delve a little deeper. The game cards resembled regular playing cards, however, instead of seeing hearts, diamonds, spades, or clubs, written on them are thought-provoking questions.
The questions were not close-ended, nor were they your regular questions like, ‘What is your favorite color?’, ‘What type of food do you like?’, ‘What is your favorite movie?’, or ‘What’s your sign? (not sure if people nowadays still use that line…lol). While those questions are important to know, these game cards take it to another level! It is played with two players, where Person A picks a card and reads it aloud to person B. Person B then either answers the question or says “Pass” if they do not feel comfortable answering that question. Then the reverse happens.
Based on the information stated in the video, there are decks of cards to suit different relationship dynamics, namely: couples, dating, friends, and self. The video that captured my attention was that of a couple who were in dating each other exclusively. Person A pulled the card and read the following question: “What does our love feel like?” Person B responded in the most genuine, deepest, and sweetest way by saying:
“Our love to me feels like finally being able to…like breathe and don’t really know what that feels like until you do get to breathe. It’s like life. In life, we wear all of that armor. We wear all of this heaviness and the baggage that we’re carrying and all of the weight from everything that we’ve done, and been, and had to be, and will continue to have to be… and our love feels like even if you can’t take it off… even if the weight of it…it is just going to exist and be there… and you know it is. Love feels like moments where we get to lie down and we get to breathe and the weight of it doesn’t have to hold us down and be that kind of all-consuming pain.”
I was so blown away by this response. It inspired me to purchase a deck because I was curious to see what other intriguing questions might be within the deck. Dating can be fun, but it can also be nerve-wracking. I think this an easy, affordable, innovative, yet meaningful way to get to know someone you care about–deeply.
